URNA COLLECTION

Urna Vase

Throughout the world Indigenous people have cultivated and inhabited hundreds of acres for many generations. As natural resources become scarce due to consumption and overpopulation companies look for areas of land rich in minerals and resources.

The Belo Monte Dam is currently under construction after 20 plus years of unsuccessful protests by the Kayapo people located in the southern Amazon. The dam has demolished rainforests as well as displacing thousands of farmers, settlers and indigenous people. The devastation to the rainforest can already be seen and has affected not only the Kayapo but the Arara, Juruna, Araweté, Xikrin, Asurini and Parakanã Indians as well.

Urna was created as an homage to the many displaced lives that has occurred due to the Belo Monte Dam construction. Urna’s colorful beading was created by the Yawanawa people. These intricate patterns take numerous hours to complete as well as providing financial means for many of these families, they rely on this as a vital part of their income.

The celebration of life and creation continues in this piece and returns the recognition back to such significant people.
