CAIXA D’AGUA COLLECTION

Caixa D'Agua Vase

Water resources management is a key element of Brazil’s strategy to promote sustainable growth and a more equitable and inclusive society. Two challenges in water resources management stand out for their enormous social impacts:

1. unreliable access to water with a strong adverse impact on the living and health standards of the rural populations in the Northeast where two million households, most in extreme poverty, live, and

2. water pollution in and near large urban centers, which compromises disadvantaged populations' health, creates an environmental damage, and increases the cost of water treatment for downstream users.

The Caixa d'agua project consists of miniature terracota replicas of the popular water tanks functioning as vases. The bottom of each tank/vase is covered with dried up cracked earth representing the water shortages, unreliable access to water and pollution that often happens in urban settings around Brazil. It is a surprising situation in a country that has plenty natural water resources. It is also due to mismanagement. One can fill the vase with water as much as needed however the bottom remains permanently cracked.
