GERMANO BRASILEIRO COLLECTION

Centerpiece

In 1827, German emigrants from Idar-Oberstein, a leading gemstone center, discovered the world’s most important agate deposit in Brazil’s state of Rio Grande do Sul. As early as 1834, the first delivery of agate from Brazil has been made to Idar-Oberstein. Agate nodules were shipped back as ballast on empty vessels that had offloaded cargo in Brazil. The cheap rough agates were then transported to Idar-Oberstein to be cut and polished.

This collection entitled Germano-Brasileiro, presents a set of 8 bowls where the shape evokes the roundness of a boats hull.

In the bottom poetically sits a slice of Brazilian agate stone.

The entire ceramics is held by a turks head loop made in cotton rope, recalling nautical themes.

My aspiration in creating this piece was to illuminate the significance that German immigrants implemented into Brazilian society.
